Tutoring

Our “Empowerment thru Education Program” is the key focus of Support for the Kids’ fund-raising efforts. The program was created in 2000 to fill the void left by Ventura County’s elimination of its tutoring program for foster youth due to budget cuts. About 90% of foster children are performing below their age-appropriate grade level and less than 40% graduate from high school. Without support the odds are heavily against these kids being able to have success in the workplace and life.
How the program works:-
- A child in need is identified through their social worker.
- We partner with a professional tutoring service, (Tutorific), to provide one hour individual sessions with a tutor twice a week.
- We work with the Social worker, teacher, foster parent and tutor to ensure that goals for each child are on track.
Measurable Results:- Using a method of pre and post testing the goal for each child is to improve their reading scores by at least 1.3 years and to improve from one to three grade levels by their 30th tutoring session.
Additional benefits and results:-
Along with the academic improvement we almost always see an increased enthusiasm for learning and motivation to study, as well improved attendance and behavior in class.
Where your money goes:-
Support for the Kids provides all its services for free. There is no charge to the foster family and 100% of the funds we collect for this program go to pay the tutoring services. We are 100% volunteer based and have no overhead.
We are currently tutoring about 35 kids but have many more on a waiting list. |
